For one day only, The Place brings entertaining dance performances, creative workshops and unexpected surprises programmed for children and their grown-ups to Coram’s Field in Bloomsbury. The ever-popular Family Dance Day returns on Saturday 15 July 2023 with a new line up of FREE events and activities for all ages.

This year, Family Dance Day will be taking over Coram’s Field, a seven-acre children’s only park and playground situated in Bloomsbury, that has been a haven for play since 1936. Taking over the grounds, the Main Stage, the Pavilion and the Hall with dance activities, Family Dance Day offers an opportunity for children aged 2-10 years and their grown-ups to be dazzled by fantastic theatre shows, interactive storytelling, arts, crafts, and dance workshops and so much more! Family Dance Day is the chance for families to watch, do and dance together. Activities start from 11:30am – 4.30pm.

On the Main Stage, there are three fun and interactive dance theatre shows for young audiences and their families to discover:

Look Mum, No Hands… tells the tender tale of friendship and growing up. Two friends test their own boundaries as they explore freedom, taking risks and independence together, and find out how those things change, depending on who you are.

BOOK 4 SHORTS by Birdgang Ltd. is a Hip-Hop dance adventure where two friends need your help! Join in with the dancers and get the chance to finish telling their story in this interactive and lively show. BOOK 4 SHORTS promises to engage and inspire children through an unforgettable experience!

Across the grounds of Coram’s Field, Mughal Miniatures: The Princess and the Peacock is a promenading theatre show for ages 3+ by Sonia Sabri, one of the world’s leading Kathak dancers and choreographers. Her productions reflect an appreciation of Western and Eastern cultures. The titular characters, the proud and majestic peacock and the prim and pretty princess, roam through the crowds and compete for attention from each other and the audience – both are elegant and beautiful so who will manage to outdo the other? With stunning costumes and expressive movement, this interactive dance performance is a visual treat for the whole family.

Corali is a dance company that has been leading in the creation of dance theatre by artists with learning disabilities for 33 years and has become known for its work that explores the relationship between performers with and without a learning disability. Super Hot Hot Dog (for ages 3+) imagines a visit to the seaside in a fantastical show that whisks families away on a holiday adventure to remember! We meet an extrovert ice cream seller who shares special memories about ice cream and dances his favourite flavours, and deep underwater, there is a strange world of mysterious sea creatures where a wise Octopus learns to untangle.

In the Pavilion, the underwater theme continues with interactive storytelling with Cyro, well known from performances at Shakespeare’s Globe and Cabaret festival Fantabulosa. Watch, listen and join in the action as they read their favourite children’s stories featuring female pirates and nonbinary mermaids!

Family Dance Day will happen come rain or shine! In the event of rain there’s plenty of room for shows to take place inside, just bring your wellies and raincoats for jumping in puddles! If it’s a very hot day, we will have lots of water on hand and there’s plenty of shade in the park, there’s even a splash pool to cool off in!

Family Dance Day will be taking place at Coram’s Fields (93 Guilford St, London WC1N 1DN). The closes stations are Russel Square, Euston and Kings Cross Stations.
