Rambert School perform at the Royal Opera House’s Linbury Theatre – 23-24 June

Rambert School takes to the stage at the Linbury Theatre on the 23 & 24 June as part of the Royal Opera House’s Next Generation Festival, showcasing the artistry, creativity and excellence of future global dance talent.

For these celebratory performances, Rambert School presents six new commissions from some of the most innovative emerging names in dance, alongside two restaging’s from internationally renowned choreographers.

The programme for the evening sees the Year 2 students perform an extract of Wayne McGregor’s award-winning work Entity, an emotionally uncompromising and hard-hitting piece that showcases the technical excellence of the students. Alongside this, they will also perform extracts from Russell Maliphant’s award-winning ensemble work Fallen, originally created for the BalletBoyz ten years ago.

The six new commissions for the performances see the Year 3 students display their versatility as artists as they perform a range of dance styles, including ballet, contemporary, South Asian, and hip-hop dance.

Choreographer and dancer Seeta Patel has created new piece Lost in Crowd. Set to music by Henryk Gorecki and combining Seeta’s signature choreographic language of Bharatanatyam and contemporary dance, this work depicts the power dynamics between the ensemble and the soloist.

Ana Maria Lucaciu, together with the dancers, has created Travelling Song. A former dancer with National Ballet of Canada, Royal Danish Ballet and Cedar Lake Contemporary Ballet, Ana has previously assisted Crystal Pite on her Polaris project and most recently has been working with Alexander Ekman on new creations.

The students have also worked with Rambert School alumni and recent nominees at the Critics’ Circle National Dance Awards, Thick & Tight on a new disco-ballet, Billionaires in Space (and don’t come back!), a timely exploration of the race to colonize space by the super-rich and those left behind.

Another Rambert School alumni Jessica Nupen has created Geburt. A multidisciplined artist, Jessica’s work often fuses dance with opera and film to tell politically charged stories that resonate with the world today.

Freelance choreographer and dance artist, Daniel Davidson has created Dear, I Fear, that explores the complexities of relationships and ultimately heartbreak that can occur. As a dancer Daniel was previously a member of Scottish Ballet and Rambert, where he performed works by many of the world’s leading choreographers.

Completing the evening’s programme is Matsena Productions. Recently nominated for a Critics’ Circle National Dance Award, they have created new work Toyfest which sees a group of inanimate characters come to life, featuring slick grooves and a punchy score.  

For over 100 years Rambert School has been at the forefront of dance training in the UK and still stands by its founding principles of innovation, creativity and individuality, reflected in its holistic approach to nurturing talent and developing the dance artists of the future. Rambert School will celebrate its rich history with RS100, a unique, immersive evening of choreography and dance, on Wednesday 8 November 2023.
