New qualification helping more people bring the benefits of dance to their communities

The ISTDs Level 4 Diploma in Teaching Community Dance (DTCD) qualification, delivered by ISTD Academy, is designed to equip dance practitioners with the skills, confidence and professional training needed to lead inclusive and inspiring dance experiences within community settings. Designed for aspiring and practising dance workshop facilitators, community arts practitioners, freelance dance teachers and creative movement specialists, the qualification prepares graduates to work with diverse participants across a range of settings, from after-school and youth programmes to care settings, community groups and inclusive dance projects.

As demand grows for activities that support physical wellbeing, creativity, social connection and lifelong learning, the Diploma offers a route into community dance teaching for individuals from a wide range of backgrounds, including freelance dance practitioners, school-based educators, community arts workers and those already delivering dance activities without a formal teaching qualification. Unlike traditional dance teacher training routes, the DTCD focuses on inclusive, participant-centred teaching and creative engagement. Students will develop the skills to plan and deliver workshops, projects and dance experiences for a wide range of participants, including children and young people, families, adults, disabled people, people with additional needs, community groups and those with little or no previous dance experience.

The programme combines practical teaching experience with professional training in safe dance practice, applied teaching methods and child development, supported by specialist tutors and industry mentors. Graduates may go on to work with schools, community arts organisations, cultural venues, health and wellbeing programmes, outreach initiatives, site-specific projects and freelance participatory dance practice. Developed collaboratively with community dance practitioners, the qualification recognises that talented dance leaders often enter the profession through varied pathways.

The programme is suitable for both those with a professional dance background and those who may not have had access to traditional conservatoire or vocational training. The flexible structure allows learners to study alongside existing teaching and other commitments, making professional development more accessible. The qualification reflects the changing nature of dance employment, where many practitioners build careers through freelance teaching, fixed-term projects and community-based programmes. Alongside practical teaching skills, learners gain experience in planning workshops, coordinating projects, adapting activities for a wide range of participants and creating safe, inclusive learning environments.

Recent graduate Laura Tuckey credits the Diploma with giving her the confidence to develop her own creative practice and deliver inclusive dance opportunities for people who may never have considered taking part in dance. Through her studies, Laura established and delivered a beginner ballet programme for adults, bringing together participants who had little or no prior dance experience. Reflecting on her experience, Laura said: "What I found really fulfilling was involving people who were new to dance or were picking it up later in life. The Diploma gave me a much deeper understanding of teaching and the confidence to create opportunities for people to experience dance in welcoming, supportive environments." Laura believes community dance has an important role to play in making culture and creativity accessible to everyone. "Community dance is about bringing dance to people rather than dance being something only certain people can access. Dance is such an amazing practice, and you want everybody to have the opportunity to enjoy it."

Community dance practitioner and ISTD Trustee Tom Hobden has described community dance as an essential skill for modern dance educators, highlighting its ability to bring the joy and health benefits of dance directly into communities and create positive impact where it matters most.
