If you have a passion for teaching dance in schools and community settings but do not hold a formal dance qualification, then this is the course for you!

The Diploma is designed to support teachers working in schools and community settings gain a regulated community dance teaching qualification and provide career development opportunities. Graduates will be able to demonstrate safe practice, application of teaching and learning strategies, and the ability to assess and understand the needs of dance students.

“Community dance has been the cornerstone of my career, offering me an unmatched blend of creativity, technical expertise, and an invaluable communication style that enables me to bring dance to anyone I meet. In today’s evolving landscape, community dance is an essential skill for any forward-thinking dance educator. That’s why I am immensely proud that the ISTD is at the forefront with their new community teaching qualification. This values-driven, child-centred programme is designed to empower teachers to bring the joy and health benefits of dance directly into their communities. It equips you to share your passion for dance, making a positive impact at the heart of where it matters most.”

Tom Hobden ISTD Trustee, Creative Director, Dance Artist, Filmmaker The course is divided into three core units of study; safe dance practice, applied teaching practice and child development. The engaging courses will be delivered by specialist lecturers from the community dance sector and an industry mentor will be assigned to support learners with constructive feedback to develop their own teaching style and upskill and develop confidence within their field.

The Diploma qualification was created collaboratively by the ISTD with industry practitioners to provide teachers within community projects the teaching skills to plan and structure creative ideas.

Parable Dance said: “The new DTCD qualification prepares community dance practitioners to teach safely and effectively in the community. It is available to work towards in existing placements, which makes it flexible.”

The course is accessible for those who may not have had access to traditional dance training, providing greater access to dance teaching as a career; Natasha Britton from Parable Dance explains; “Students will be able to access the course via a number of pathways. As an example, a dancer with disabilities who has been unable to attend conservatoire training, but who has gained valuable experience within community settings, will be able to apply. This bridges a gap and recognises the varied pathways taken by people into the dance industry.”
