Hakeem Onibudo wins prestigious award for lifetime contribution to dance

CEO and Artistic Director of Impact Dance, Hakeem Onibudo was honoured with a prestigious award for his 30-year service to the dance industry.

The event was organised by One Dance UK (the sector support organisation for dance) and held in The Patrick Studio at the Birmingham Hippodrome. The awards exist to acknowledge the outstanding contributions of those changing lives through dance, and those whose exceptional hard work is helping to move the sector forward. 

Hakeem’s dedication to empowering young people to find their voice and confidence through dance, has touched countless lives over the past 30 years, from London to Atlanta, Nigeria, and Venezuela. ⁠ 

⁠His legacy of mentorship, leadership, and life-changing work continues to inspire generations of dancers at Impact Dance and beyond.⁠ 

⁠ On receiving the award Hakeem said:  

“I’m honoured to receive the Jane Attenborough – One Dance UK award, recognising my life’s work. This award not only acknowledges my personal journey but also shines a light on the commitment of Impact Dance to empower young dancers.

For over two decades, we’ve strived to provide high quality training and performance opportunities, nurturing talent and fostering a sense of community. I hope that in receiving this award, it serves as a beacon of encouragement to other dance artists of colour. Our contributions are vital, and it’s essential that they are recognised and celebrated.”

Impact is an award-winning dance company for young people, specialising in Hip-Hop Theatre, Street Dance and Youth Development. Established in 1995 by Hakeem Onibudo, Impact is an art-for-social-change organisation that works to make dance training accessible for all.
