Eliot Smith Dance (ESD) is proud to announce the return of its highly acclaimed contemporary dance production, PITMAN, this spring.

This powerful performance takes audiences into the world of the Pitmen Painters, a famous group of working-class artists from Ashington, England. Through striking choreography and evocative storytelling, PITMAN brings ten of their illustrations to life on stage, blending historical narrative with dynamic contemporary dance.

The Pitmen Painters gained recognition in the mid-20th century for their untrained yet remarkably skilled approach to art, capturing the struggles, triumphs, and beauty of working-class life. ESD’s choreographic interpretation of their story is a celebration of resilience, artistic expression, and the power of community.

"PITMAN" is a journey through the heart and soul of a generation, and we’re thrilled to bring it back to the stage this spring," says Eliot Smith, Creative Director of ESD. "It’s a piece that resonates not only with dance lovers but also with anyone who appreciates the triumphs of the human spirit."

Performances will take place on 06 February at The Bowes Museum (Barnard Castle), 08 February at Warkworth Memorial Hall (Warkworth), 19 February at Newbiggin Maritime Centre (Newbiggin-by-the-Sea), 20 February at Gosforth Civic Theatre (Newcastle), 21 February at The Maltings (Berwick upon Tweed), and 08 March at Trinity Centre (Tunbridge Wells).
