Dance brings pupils, parents and teachers together before the school day

A primary school in East Yorkshire is bringing dance into the school day before lessons have even begun, with pupils, parents, teachers and siblings coming together for regular morning discos.

Leven Primary School holds its “Rise and Shine” sessions every Monday, Wednesday and Friday, playing music in the playground and encouraging the school community to dance together.

The sessions began in June, initially taking place twice a week, but their popularity led the school to introduce a third morning.

Headteacher Leanne Hansell says the sessions have created a positive and inclusive start to the school day, giving children the opportunity to dance with their friends, families and teachers.

The school also reports that the sessions have helped improve punctuality and attendance, with pupils eager to arrive at school in time to take part.
