Royal Academy of Dance (RAD), in partnership with the Jack Petchey Foundation, has introduced 'Step Forward,' a new initiative aimed at providing schools and youth groups in London and Essex with accessible dance workshops.

Designed for students aged 11 to 18 who are new to dance, Step Forward offers taster sessions in Hip Hop, Jazz, or Contemporary dance. These workshops are intended to foster an inclusive environment, allowing all students, especially boys, to explore movement and expression whilst at school.

The programme enhances mental and physical health, reduces social anxiety, and widens access to dance for boys. Despite dance being on the school curriculum, in a recent Ofsted report it was cited that in two thirds of schools, dance is not taught to all pupils, or the dance content being taught is not well organised. Step Forward fills the gap here, providing a low-cost, accessible dance programme.

The initiative also includes a performance component, where students collaborate with practitioners to create a piece of choreography. This final piece is performed for peers and school staff, providing a platform for students to showcase their learning and build confidence. “Step Forward is a brilliant programme that inspires boys to dance and supports teachers in bringing dance into their schools. With growing financial pressures on education, it offers a cost-effective way to deliver high-quality dance experiences and teaching.” – Alexander Campbell, Artistic Director of the RAD.

Speaking about the Step Forward programme, Gemma Juma, Chief Executive Officer of the Jack Petchey Foundation, said: “The Step Forward programme is an exciting new initiative that will open doors to creativity, confidence, and self-expression. We’re proud to support a programme that empowers young dancers, especially boys, to discover their potential through movement.” Step Forward is a stepping stone to Step into Dance, the largest inclusive dance programme for secondary schools in the UK.

The Royal Academy of Dance is a global leader in dance education and training, promoting excellence in dance training. The RAD delivers Step Forward and Step into Dance in partnership with Jack Petchey Foundation, which provides opportunities for young people across London and Essex to build their skills, confidence and voice, so they can fulfil their potential and have a positive impact on society. Step Forward is available for booking from February 17 to July 18, 2026. Schools and youth organisations interested in participating can register through the RAD's official website.
