Here is your quick look at the cast of Ballet Nights Glasgow…
Bringing a distinct Scottish flavour to the programme, we are thrilled to be celebrating three former Principals of Scottish Ballet, returning to their home stage and audiences, Sophie Martin, Eve Mutso, and Constance Devernay-Laurence.
Sophie Martin will perform alongside Joan Ivaris Ribes, both currently dancing with Ballett Am Rhein, bringing us David Dawson’s duet ‘On the Nature of Daylight’; a beautiful duet that explores the perfectly ordinary yet extraordinary mystery of love, choreographed to music by Max Richter that is balm to the soul.
Eve Mutso takes to the stage alongside Mezzo Soprano, Dana Mays, to bring us a solo from Five Rückert Songs, "Ich bin der Welt abhanden gekommen", translating to “I have become lost to the world”; the final song of the piece one of Peter Darrel CBE’s signature works. Founder of Scottish Ballet, we are thrilled to be celebrating a choreographer so instrumental in the dance fabric of Scotland.
Constance Devernay-Laurence, fresh off the premiere of Prime Video’s Étoile which she Stars in as the dancing double lead character Lou De Laâge, as well as acting the part of one of the Paris dancers, Mélanie, also returns to the Scottish stage, performing a solo from the show choreographed by Christopher Wheeldon. Alongside Leading Soloist of Northern Ballet, Kevin Poeung, and Former Principal of Birmingham Royal Ballet, Tyrone Singleton, she will also perform in excerpts from Kenneth MacMillan’s Elite Syncopations “Stoptime Rag”, “Friday Night”, & “Bethena Rag Waltz”.
We are also thrilled to be bringing Star of The Royal Ballet and Ballet Nights favourite, Steven McRae to Glasgow, who will perform his iconic tap solo Czárdás alongside Scottish Ballet Orchestra violinist, Gillian Risi - promising to have the whole audience on their feet! Steven will be joined in the programme by one of The Royal Ballet’s rising Stars, Caspar Lench, who will perform 324a, choreographed by Soloist Joshua Junker who has previously performed the work at Ballet Nights New Voices, also seen on Felicity Chadwick at the main stage performance.
Alongside the Company Stars, Ballet Nights bring fresh new voices making work today; the choreographic duo BLACBRIK, made up of Darius Drooh and Nahum McLean, performing their piece, Death of the Bachelors, that was received to critical acclaim by London audiences; as well as the contemporary fusion choreographic duo Ekleido, made up of Hannah Ekholm & Faye Stoesser, seen at Ballet Nights New Voices.
All joined by Glasgow born star of Gauthier Dance, Andrew Cummings, performing Infant Spirit choreographed by Marco Goeke; Ballet Nights House Concert Pianist, Viktor Erik Emanuel; as well as the Graduating Student year for the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland in a new work choreographed by Diana Loosemore.
“As a former dancer with Scottish Ballet for over a decade, Glasgow holds a very special place in my heart and my creative soul” says Jamiel Devernay-Laurence,”In bringing my show concept to my old home, Ballet Nights offers me and many returning former Scottish Ballet stars the chance to reconnect with the audiences that made us, and to share our passion for dance with the community that helped us cut our teeth. I’m equally excited to showcase the global acts we’ve been growing the show with in London, alongside rarely seen Scottish voices - bringing our unique blend of artistry and innovation to Glasgow, and celebrating the magic of dance with audiences old and new”
Such a packed programme, this is not one to miss - certainly worth a train journey! Don’t forget to check out Ballet Nights Masterclasses running the day of the show, bringing the Stars of Ballet Nights Glasgow from the stage to the studio in what promises to be an inspiring day of learning.
