Hemantika is about our identity, heritage and commitment towards developing the Indian dance sector (its’ artists, audiences and profile) and exposing the genre to new audiences across the UK.
Hemantika is also about fostering a sense of celebration and recognising the wider UK dance community, achieved through our interdisciplinary work with choreographers Jose Agudo and Rosemary Lee and our exciting program of outreach activities in schools and community groups. The festival is annually programmed for November (in the month of Hemant/Autumn) and is focused on an overarching theme – which remains as a theme for SBDC’s wider activities over the 6 months following the festival.
This year the theme is the number ‘8’.
Not only is it eighth year of Hemantika but this number has significance in numerology as it is the number which reflects balance and karma and is associated with infinite possibilities. It is also a number which resonates with authority and self-confidence - values that SBDC endeavours to instil in its students, staff and creative team.
This is SBDC’s first time performing in Broadway Theatre, Barking, as we have recognised for quite some time that there is a high percentage of local residents identifying as South Asian or of South Asian heritage in the borough and a shortage of high quality South Asian activities. Launching Hemantika 2023 in Broadway Theatre is part of our strategic plan to develop our work in the Barking Dagenham area.
